Emerging Markets and Climate Change

Emerging Markets and Climate Change

Climate change is the most important story of the 21th century – perhaps the greatest challenge our civilisation has ever faced. And those in the global South will suffer disproportionately from its effects. Today, we explore what the future holds for emerging markets in the upheaval to create a post-carbon world. Is there hope?

Joining us are Professor Cameron Hepburn, Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Oxford, Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and United Nation’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, whose recent book Climate Justice urgently addresses the problem, and Laurent Ramsey, Managing Partner of the Pictet Group. Pictet Kiran Nandra, Senior Client Portfolio Manager for Pictet Asset Management moderates the discussion.

Appearing in this episode

Mary Robinson was the first female President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Mary Robinson is a globally recognised voice on climate change and frequently highlights the need for drastic action from world leaders, as well as the intersectionality of the climate emergency: from intergenerational injustice to gender inequality and biodiversity loss.

Cameron Hepburn is Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Oxford, and Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. He also serves as the Director of the Economics of Sustainability Programme, based at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. Cameron has published widely on energy, resources and environmental challenges across disciplines including engineering, biology, philosophy, economics, public policy and law, drawing on degrees in law and engineering (Melbourne University) and masters and doctorate in economics (Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar). He has co-founded three successful businesses and provides advice on energy and environmental policy to government ministers (e.g. China, India, UK and Australia) and international institutions (e.g. OECD, UN).

Laurent Ramsey has been a Managing Partner of the Pictet Group since 1 January 2016. He has co-headed Pictet Asset Management with Sébastien Eisinger since 1 April 2019, having been solely responsible for the Group’s institutional arm between 2016 and 2019. He joined Pictet in 1993 and has held various senior management positions at Pictet Asset Management in Geneva, Hong Kong, Singapore and London. Laurent holds a Master’s in International Management from HEC Lausanne School of Business and Economics and a degree in Business Administration. Laurent also serves as Vice-President of the Geneva Financial Centre.

Kiran Nandra joined Pictet Asset Management in 2016. She is the Senior Client Portfolio Manager for the Emerging Equities team. Previously, Kiran worked at Wellington Management where she was most recently a Portfolio Specialist. She joined Wellington in 2003 in a Relationship Management role before becoming a Research Analyst covering European and Latin American banks. Kiran graduated from University College London with an LLB (Honours) degree in Law.
